When American homicide detective, Cathy Macpherson, reluctantly agrees to join her husband on a genealogy trip to Scotland, she does not expect to solve a mystery set in motion by her own ancestors. Switching back and forth between Victorian times and 2011, Bloodlines - Touch Not the Cat, reveals what forced Alexander Stewart to emigrate to America in 1895 and what moved laird Gordon Macpherson to protect his Highland values. Women's suffrage, racism and social division are at the heart of this gripping mystery. All bloodlines and events come together at a clan gathering in Scotland, where a family skeleton has a story to tell.

"Normally I’m not one for different timeframes in fiction, but in Bloodlines - Touch Not the Cat, it provided more depth and suspense.

To me the Bloodlines series are tales of courage, following up on chances paved by our ancestors through time, the quest to find what really matters.

The Bloodline characters work around the inevitable obstacles life brings while thinking out of the box”

Havind read all sorts of books, sometimes I get bored by carefully constructed, predictable plots. This book is refreshingly different, more organic, it flows like the river Spey, in a steady pace with unexpected turns.
The only disadvantage is that I had to wait for book II, but now it's here: Bloodlines: Traces.

Bloodlines Touch not the Cat edition by Thomas McKerley Ingrid Schippers Creation Booth Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Bloodlines Touch Not the Cat is a genealogy novel spanning three centuries and across two continents.

American detective Cathy Stewart reluctantly heads to Scotland to attend an ancestral family reunion and soon finds herself embroiled in a spiritual mystery involving relatives past and present.

Using her professional skills to investigate the case of a missing person more than 100 years earlier, Cathy soon manages to ruffle feathers in her bid to uncover the mysterious disappearance of the Laird in 1895.

Authors Thomas McKerley and Ingrid Schippers have clearly researched the material extensively and anyone with Scottish heritage is likely to enjoy the nods to real-life locations i.e. Ballindalloch Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

This is a well-written story that gently but surely weaves a path between the centuries, that is sure to appeal to expat Highlanders and genealogy buffs alike.
Once I started reading the storylines were so grasping that I couldn't put it down. The story starts in two time perdiods and brings them together in Schotland in a surprising end. I found it one of the best books I read in years and I am looking forward to more from these authors.
For Scottish stories and mystery fans, this is a can't miss. I'm not sure how to elaborate on the published description without giving away the store. Also, I'm not sure what else I can say in order to meet he word count restrictions on reviews.
I very much enjoy mysteries that incorporate the past and how it influences who we are in the present, and our connections to individuals who, long dead, seem to live on within us, even when we're unaware. If these authors come up with a second book, I will be pleased to read it.
I liked the intertwining of an ancient mystery with the genealogy. Well done. There's enough detail to keep a genealogist interested and the mystery felt real. I liked the characters.
More a procedural than a mystery, but interesting comparison between 1895 and 2011.
I bought this because I'm a fan of mysteries and I'm a genealogist (avocation, not profession). I have been intrigued by authors who are trying to combine genealogy with the mystery format. This book fails on both counts. The mystery is quite transparent. The genealogy (what little of it there is) is weak, and in many cases plain wrong (in the story the immigrant ancestor is presented with a Declaration of Intent at Ellis Island, which he must sign before he can go; in fact an immigrant had to live in the U.S. for 5 years before he could initiate a Declaration of Intent, and he needed two witnesses to attest to how long he'd been in the U.S. and that he was of good character - just one of many errors in the book). The build up at the end of the book to its sequel was also weak.
