When I first saw the cover, I wasn't sure I would like this one. Then I read the blurb and the first chapter and I couldn't wait to begin reading. This is a book that has an alternate mythology with a Hobbit or LOTR feel. At least that's how it was for me. And this main character, although he is called a Golem, he is nothing like the one in the two aforementioned books. He is controlled by a box, yes, but this box controls him to protect it and it's contents to the death. Because of this, he is left with the burden of those he has killed to do so, incapable of stopping himself from performing this terrible deed. In his desire to be free of this curse, he wants to be like the rest, have a soul, no longer take the lives of those who chase after the magic he holds in his breast pocket. But then his life becomes even more complicated. There is beauty in what others would consider ugly. This book shows you a deeper look into the soul of an outcast who seems terrible and unlovable on the surface. Once Wenstrom peels back his layers, slowly and meticulously, you see his brilliant core in a burst of glory. His strength far outweighs his weaknesses.
The writing is intriguing. The characters are rich and, at times, haunting. You care about this Golem and his journey. You wholeheartedly cheer for him to succeed. I am still pondering each of the characters and their struggles as well as their strengths as they continue their quest. I LOVED this book and will encourage my kids to read it, also. I know they will love it just as much. And I CAN'T WAIT for the next book to launch!

This book was awesome! I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I really felt for the reluctant hero. I pulled for him despite himself. It kept me turning the pages. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
An unlikely hero, a golem. A perilous journey. The Underworld, where nothing is what it seems, where frightening realms create traps to prey on lost souls. And the devastating choices Adem must make on every turn of his quest. Spellbinding story.
This is a story of a golem. It's new. It's different. And it's something you won't forget. The author explains that she wanted something new and different to write about. Well she's done it. And it's an interesting story, imho, that takes you on a journey beyond your imagination.
I enjoyed this book so much that I binge-read it, totally neglecting my family for 2 days! I loved the characters, imagination, and unique point of view. Highly recommended!
A very impressive debut novel. The story and characters stand on their own merit while effectively setting us up for the sequel. The story tends more to fantasy than dystopia, and the fantasy is thoroughly imagined and hangs together well. The characters have complexity and depth, and not everything turns out for them as you might expect.
The real measure of the quality of this book is that it makes me want to read more--not just the promised books to follow in the Chronicles of the Third Realm War, but also to go deeper and read more about the Orpheus myth in which this story has its antecedents.
You wouldn't expect a mythological, souless creature to be a relatable main character, but his desire to do good and subsequent failures is about as human as it gets. With a captivating story, you are sure to want to continue the adventure with Tides.
Very nice reinterpretation of mythology, with original flavor and twists. The writing was strong, and the book had obviously been edited. Who would have thought that a golem, limited by his magical purpose, could be the hero of a story, and that the reader would connect with him. Adem is incredibly powerful, yet vulnerable; inhuman, yet human. In addition to a well-rounded development of our hero, the other significant characters are also well-developed.
Competently written, nicely paced, and intelligently plotted. Very much worth the read if you like fantasy or mythology. I'm looking forward to the next book!
